Rental Cars

Rental car companies normally give you two keys when you rent a car. Having two keys for a car is very convenient. Having two keys permanently connected together is not.

Yes, but the second key isn't for you, it's for the rental car company. Cars move around so much that there would be no way for both keys to stay with the car. Since the business model for rental cars is based on selling them after 20k miles, keeping the keys together is important. If they gave you two keychains, one would be lost by the first renter.
